A new database of hundreds of campus solar photovoltaic installations reveals higher education’s rapid adoption of solar, including a quintupling of installed capacity over the last three years. AASHE’s new Campus Solar Photovoltaic Installations database is designed for higher education solar advocates to browse success stories at campuses of a similar type, size and location. AASHE has recruited the sponsorship of AMSOLAR as part of its strategy to help solar advocates find success in the projects they initiate.
Important growth trends identified through the database include:
  • In 2010, the 52-megawatts installed on higher education campuses made up 5.4% of the 956 megawatts installed that year in the US as a whole. (Source)
  • The 137-megawatts of installed solar capacity documented in the database is equivalent to the power used by 40,000 American homes.
  • Since 2009, the median project size has grown by 6 times and the average project size has grown 3 times.
